HTML wrapper methodsLimited availability

JavaScript built-in methods such as, String.bold() and String.italics(), wrap strings in (often historic) HTML.

Not yet supported in all major browsers — check the table and provide a fallback.

Discouraged: HTML wrapper methods exist only for backwards compatibility. Use DOM APIs to create elements instead. Use instead: DOM

How to use

Support is still inconsistent across browsers. Use feature detection and test carefully.

Example

Full syntax and examples are on MDN: anchor.

Feature detection

JS · check before using
if ("anchor" in String || ("prototype" in String && "anchor" in String.prototype)) {
  // String.anchor is available
}

Sub-features

Support for each part of the feature (13). The overall table above shows when the whole feature works.
